Night Markets

Cairns hotels

The Cairns Night Market was first introduced in 1991 by a local couple who were inspired by other successful night markets they had visited on their travels to Hawaii and South East Asia. It grew from a temporary open air market with 28 stall markets to 100 vendors within 6 months and after 7 years relocated to the air-conditioned premises at the base of the Royal Harbour Hotel.
It now has over 148 permanent vendors and stalls and also boasts a 200 seat ‘Food Hall’ where you can buy such things as freshly caught and cooked Australian seafood and a varied selection of self serve options through the 13 outlets within the Hall offer anything from a quick cup of coffee all the way through to Japanese sushi, Asian foods and Italian. Something for everyone to dine on from a quick snack to a sit down main meal.

The markets have permanent vendors who offer an amazing array of goods and services. To be available in one big area and in air-conditioned comfort is unique to this part of Queensland and a welcome relief for overseas tourists not used to the often high temperatures and humidity of North Queensland even in early evening.

There is simply ‘something for everyone’ at the markets. Starting with food and beverages, there are fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh and cooked seafood, ice cream and gelatarias, a store selling all things honey, through to coffee shops, patisseries and a locally produced wine outlet. An abundance of different styles of massage is available to soothe the aching feet and backs of tourists and locals alike, including Chinese pressure point massage and there are even hairdressing and beauticians for the ladies and face painting for the kids!

Hand crafted silverwork, Australian bush timber crafts, hand painted t shirts and clothing, footwear and hats as well as a tattooist, and ornamental glass blowing are just a few of the available products and gifts available to tourists and locals alike, wanting something special to take with them.
